The european Renal Best Practice Guidelines recommend preventive use of an antimicrobial catheter lock to reduce the rate of catheter related bacteriemia. Antibiotic catheter locks promote the emergence of resistant bacteriemia; alternatively citrate in high concentration locking solution, due to its antiseptic properties, could reduce the occurrence of CRB and / or thrombosis in patients with tunneled dialysis catheter. We prospectively analyzed the occurrence of CRB and thrombosis in patients whose dialysis catheter was locked with a Trisodium citrate 46.7 locking solution or with the conventional unfractionated heparin .
